Scholarship Overview

The Childhood Obesity Conference hosts and planning partners acknowledge the important role younger generations play in advocating for improved nutrition and physical activity environments in their respective communities, thus, conference organizers remain committed to engaging young professionals and young adults exploring a career in public health, nutrition, kinesiology, health science, and/or other health-related fields to provide support and exposure to the latest best practices and research in the childhood obesity prevention field.

This year, the Childhood Obesity Conference hosts, in partnership with the Clinton Foundation, is pleased to offer young adults and young professionals full scholarship awards to attend the 8th Biennial event.

Selected young adults and young professionals will have the opportunity to network with other like-minded individuals and attend workshops and plenary sessions to expand their knowledge about childhood obesity prevention. The goal of the young adult/young professional scholarship award is to inspire, nurture and motivate the younger generation to take an active role in influencing positive community change.

Scholarship Components

Scholarships include the following components:

  • 3 nights stay in conference host hotel (Town and Country Resort and Convention Center)
  • Travel to and from conference (airfare and/or rental car/mileage etc.)
  • Complimentary registration • Parking at hotel (if driving)
  • All meals (breakfast provided onsite; lunches are reimbursable; dinners are reimbursable)

The scholarship submission window has now closed.

The call for applications will open April 13, 2015, and submissions are due by April 30, 2015, 5:00pm Pacific Daylight time.

Notification of awards will be sent by May 6, 2015.

Upon notification of a scholarship award, all completed forms and information requested by Conference planning staff will be due on or before May 22, 2015 in order to process the full scholarship award.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for a young adult/young professional scholarship award you must meet all of the requirements outlined below:

Young Adults & Young Professionals must be:

  • Between 18 – 24 years of age;
  • Affiliated with a school, community-based organization, or public program/agency. Priority will be given to those programs/agencies that provide services in low-income communities; and
  • Have at least one year of experience working (or completed coursework) to improve their school and/or community (e.g. organizing, advocacy, obesity prevention, leadership, increasing nutrition or physical activity opportunities, and/or coursework related to the principles of these strategies/skills).

Onsite Conference Participation Requirements

If awarded, scholarship recipients must participate in ONE or more of the following activities during the conference:

Video Recording & Editing
The Video Recording & Editing opportunity will be available to awardees that 1) have knowledge in videography and editing and 2) express an interest in capturing conference highlights, including interviewing conference attendees (for conference promotional purposes).

Social Networking Activities
The Social Networking Activities opportunity will be available to awardees that 1) have knowledge in social networking platforms and social marketing technics and 2) express an interest in posting their experiences and lesson learned throughout the conference on their personal, organizational, and/or the official 2015 conference social media platforms, as appropriate. This may include posting to Facebook, Tweeting, uploading videos to YouTube and downloading photos to Flickr.

Registration Volunteer
Registration volunteers will have the opportunity to work with Conference Planning Staff on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 to check-in conference attendees, hand-out conference tote bags and be a part of welcoming professionals from around the country on opening day.

Conference Session Room Monitor
Conference session room monitors will have the opportunity to work with session speakers and moderators to ensure session workshops run smoothly. Tasks include assistance with timekeeping, ensuring attendees have ample seating and running simple requests back to Conference Planning Staff should anything require immediate assistance (e.g. computer equipment glitches, requests for materials/hand-outs etc.).
